Pot up blanket flower plants and grow them on in frost free conditions until large enough to plant outdoors. When they are well grown and all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days before transplanting into their final positions in borders and containers. Grow gaillardia plants in any fertile, well drained soil in full sun.
Feed and water blanket flower plants until they are fully established. Once established gaillardia copes well with dry soils and is reasonable drought tolerant. Regular deadheading of faded gaillardia flowers will encourage more blooms to be produced. In late summer, cut back old foliage and flower stems to 15cm (6″) to encourage basal growth before the first frosts. Lift and divide overcrowded clumps of blanket flower in spring, and apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant.
