Grow Lavender in a sunny spot on free draining soil. Lavender particularly dislikes wet ground during winter months so incorporate plenty of coarse grit or sharp sand when planting on heavy clay soils. When growing lavender in patio containers, use a use a well drained soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. After planting, prune lavender plants to encourage bushy growth.
Feed and water until plants are established. Once established, lavender plants are reasonably drought tolerant and will seldom require attention. Prune Lavender stems back to two buds immediately after flowering to promote bushy growth and a multitude of flowers the following year. New growth can be lightly shaped in March if necessary.
