This architectural herbaceous perennial bears whorls of tightly packed, crimson flowers atop upright, leafy stems. The flowers are highly attractive to bees and the foliage releases an aromatic bergamot fragrance when brushed against. Monarda ‘Fireball’ is a more compact selection of this popular plant with abundant flowers over a long period from July to September. Brilliant for late season colour, grow Bee Balm in cottage garden borders, prairie-style borders, wildlife gardens and cut flower gardens. Height: 60cm (24″). Spread: 40cm (16″).

Bergamot plants dislike soils which are particularly dry or have a tendency to waterlogging. Plant them in a moist, well drained soil, adding compost or well rotted manure to amend excessively heavy clay or sandy soils. Choose a position in sun, semi shade or dappled shade.
Feed and water plants regularly until they are fully established. Deadhead faded flower heads to encourage more blooms to be produced. Cut back old foliage in autumn. Apply mulch of well rotted manure around the crown of each plant in spring. Lift and divide clumps of Monarda plants every 3 years in autumn to maintain vigorous, healthy growth.
