Its upright stems are clothed in narrow, green foliage, and this variety is semi-evergreen in sheltered locations. ‘Etna’ is an eye-catching, hardy perennial with a neat and bushy habit that works well towards the front of borders. Penstemon plants dislike cold, wet soils in winter. Plant them in a well drained site, adding compost or well rotted manure to amend heavy clay soils. Choose a position in full sun or semi shade.
Feed and water Penstemon plants regularly until they are fully established. Cut back faded Penstemon flowers to encourage more blooms to be produced. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure around the crown of each plant in autumn or spring. Avoid pruning back old foliage until spring arrives, as this will help to protect the plant during winter.
