Feed and water regularly throughout the growing season while young pomegranate trees become established. Apply a mulch of compost or well rotted manure in the spring to help retain soil moisture.
Pomegranates are best grown as multi-stemmed trees on short stems. Prune pomegranate trees in spring or summer. Select 3 or 4 branches to form a framework and remove any crowded, crossing or diseased branches. Other than this, pruning should be kept to a minimum for the best chance of fruiting. Remove any suckers which appear at the base of the plant. Pomegranate fruits can be harvested from October when the base of the fruit has become curled and brown. Use secateurs to cut them from the branch.
Container-grown pomegranates should be moved to a warmer position through the winter months, such as a cool, bright greenhouse or conservatory.
