Sidalcea ‘Elsie Heugh’ is a little gem of a plant with upright stems bearing spires of perfect pink flowers, each with a neat white centre and ragged edges. Beneath the stems, a clump of intricately cut leaves adds to the charm. It’s no wonder that this attractive Prairie Mallow has won the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit for its excellent garden performance. Sidalcea malviflora makes a pretty cut flower too. Height: 90cm (36″). Spread: 45cm (18″).

Sidalcea plants are tolerant of most situations but dislike soils which have a tendency to waterlogging. Plant them in a moist, well drained soil, adding compost or well rotted manure to amend heavy clays. Choose a position in full sun.
Feed and water plants regularly until they are fully established. Cut back old stems and foliage in autumn. Apply mulch of well rotted manure around the crown of each plant in spring.
